1. These worms require a humidity of 50-70% for survival. Any conditions dryer that this is not suitable, which [...]]]> The Eisenia fetida, have two requirements regarding their habitat to be able to survive, namely moisture and food. Let’s look at a few aspects we will consider:

1. These worms require a humidity of 50-70% for survival. Any conditions dryer that this is not suitable, which will result in worms dying.  This is the main reason why we keep these worms in bins, and when farming with worms (on the scale we do) we keep them under irrigation.

2. Food – These worms mainly feed on soft, moisture rich food, such as veggies and fruits. Garden refuse should be treated or very “old” and have a fine texture, before it can be decomposed by these worms.

3. Soil composition – These worms were not created by God to burrow deep into soil. They prefer living in the very top layer of soil which should consist out of plant “debri”. If this “rotten” plant material is not present, they will have to survive in the top soil layer. In our climate conditions, the top soil gets the most sun exposure which causes the temperature to rise to high and that the moist is removed from it. This will cause the death of the worms.  

4. When using the worm-tea, worms cocoons are not placed back into the veggie patches.  You can place the compost back into the gardens, but then to prevent the worms from spreading into it, the worms and cocoons need to harvest before you use the compost.  A method which can be used is by diluting the vermi-compost in water, making sure your cocoons are removed.  This liquid can then be applied into the gardens. This is however not required, but should you prefer, we will include this process in the training of the workers.

As far as we know, there are different types of earthworms present in all compost piles, and they “appear” when conditions are favorable.  No study that I could find, indicated that these worms are any bad for the environment.  I did come across a study in the rainforests where the decomposition was so fast, that there was too much compost for the trees to use, and this caused rotting of trees, not by the Eisenia fetida, though.  I do not think this is a danger in our climate.

6. With all surety I can say, that there should be no “escapees” from the bins.

The harvesting should take care of the rest.  Should we get any other “AWAP’s” these will do no harm, rather be a plus to the current environment and soil composition.

‘n Huishoudelike kompos fabriek is deesdae ’n maklike manier om jou eie kompos en wurmtee te maak, sonder enige drastiese insetkostes.  In die gees van herwinning, kan feitelik enige houers gebruik word om jou eie fabriek te maak. Daar is ook vele duursame en goeie ontwerpe te koop wat gerieflik werk.

’n Kompos fabriek moet ‘n reuklose, gebruikersvriendelike kompos-stelsel wees.   Plaas dit in jou motorhuis, binneshuis of in die tuin in ’n skadukol.  So ’n kompos fabriek verander enige organiese huishoudelike afval in ryk kragtige kompos en vloeibare bemesting.  Gestapelde houers laat die gebruiker toe om die kompos of te wel wurmuitskot en wurmtee (vloeibare bemesting) maklik te verwyder, sonder dat die wurms of ontbindende organiese materiaal hanteer hoef te word.

Met ’n gelaagde ontwerp beweeg die wurms opwaarts deur die werkhouers na die kos in die boonste houer.  Soos die wurms opwaarts beweeg, laat hulle organiese kompos agter.  Kombuisafval word telkens in die boonste houer gesit, en nuwe houers word bygevoeg tot die derde (boonste) houer vol is. Daar is nie meer as 3 houers nodig in die proses nie. Wanneer al die houers vol is kan die kompos in die onderste houer verwyder word en die leë houer word na bo geskuif. ‘n Kraan word gebruik om die vloeibare bemesting in te samel vir gebruik as ’n opkikker vir plante. Met klein ventilasie gate, ‘n deksel en noupassende houers is die kompos fabriek bestand teen ongewensde indringers soos muggies of vlieë.

 ‘n Gevestigde wurmhouer huisves ‘n bevolking van tussen 2,5-3kg wurms. Die hoeveelheid wurms kan tot drie keer hulle eie gewig per week in kombuisafval opgebruik – tot 1.5 kg per dag.  Voer die wurms aanvanklik hul eie gewig per dag. Die wurms verdubbel elke 3 tot 4 maande in massa. 

 Daar word aanbeveel dat die fabriek met ten minste 1000 komposwurms (Eisenia feotida / E. ardenii) begin word, dit is ongeveer 150g wurms.

Pak jou wurms, kartondoos en al in houer 2. Plaas ‘n blok beddegoed, (palmpeat), saam in die houer indien jy nie fyn kompos het vir die wurms nie. Rangskik ‘n dik laag geskeurde koerantpapier wat in water gedompel was bo-op. Plaas jou houer se deksel op. Indien jy die wurms voer, plaas die kos onder die laag koerant papier en skuif koerante weer bo-op. Dit hou die kos klam, en beheer die vog in jou houer, sodat jy kan sien wanneer jou kompos fabriek te droog is.

 Moenie onnodiglik water by die houer voeg nie, dit kan die houer suur maak. Los die kraan oop met ‘n emmertjie onder indien jy met vakansie gaan, anders kan die wurms in die tee versuip!
